Match Summary (Cullompton and Kenn under-13)
Records tumbled for the under-13s as they tasted success for the first time as a team, beating visiting Kenn at Landspeed Meadow by 36 runs.
No fewer than five of the batsmen recorded personal bests with the willow whilst one of the bowlers claimed a first ever four wicket haul.
After being put in, Cully put on 28 for the first wicket with Lloyd Small the batsman in charge and Evan Tinley offering the support. Tinley departed for a two boundary eight which brought skipper Tom Mortiboys to the wicket. He spanked his first ball faced over the ropes on the railway side of the ground and went on to hit twenty before he fell to a spectacular catch. Mortiboys and Small added 42 for the second wicket - a new team best for any wicket partnership!
Robert Jarrett then hit his highest score this term of eight, he too fell to a stunning catch after striking two lovely boundaries. Small eventually departed for a splendid 26 - that his highest to date score. Nathan Jenner hit 8, his highest knock to date and Dominic Horrell, who has spent many hours knocking in his new bat, hit a personal best of 11 before he became yet another victim of some excellent catching by the Kenn fielders.
William Birley came and went - he was also caught without troubling the scorers but Josh Richards (4) and Jordan Biss (7) both kept their wickets intact to see the innings close on 130-7. That knock of Biss was yet another personal best for a Cully batsman on the night. Ed Bragg claimed three catches, one off his own bowling and there was a brace also for Lawrence Glassforth.
The Kenn innings got off to the worst possible start as Cully skipper Tom Mortiboys trapped their opener, Pat Boot, with a beauty, plumb leg before - that off the very first delivery! A partnership of 29 followed between Ed Bragg and the classy James Gosling before George Hawkins bowled Bragg for 5. Gosling spanked two huge 6s and also struck four 4's. Indeed he caught another delivery from Sam Palmer that was heading for a third six only for Euan Tinley to make a magnificent catch over by the railway line and Gosling departed for an excellent 37.
Skipper Mortiboys shuffled his pack. Young Palmer gave the ball some delightful flight and earned praise from many of the visiting parents for his style. Palmer picked up a second wicket with a tidy caught and bowled and, in between, William Birley picked up a couple of wickets helped first by a smart catch from the skipper and then when wicketkeeper Jordan Biss, playing only his second game ever behind the stumps, held his first ever catch in that department! Birley and Palmer, in a six over spell, went for just 25 as the run rate slowed up and when Birley was thrown the ball by captain Mortiboys to deliver the final over he claimed two more wickets, thanks to a magnificent catch from Josh Richards and the bowler had the final say, taking a lofted catch off his own bowling with the very last delivery of the match to finish with best to date figures of 4-17.
Scores:
Cullompton 130-7 (L Small 26, T Mortiboys 20; L Glassforth 2-4, E Bragg 2-15), Kenn 94-8 (J Gosling 37, T Gayle 14; W Birley 4-17, S Palmer 2-16).
Cullompton won by 36 runs.
Match Summary (Cullompton and Sandford under-13)
Cullompton and Sandford under-13s played out a thrilling tie when the pair met at Landspeed Meadow. Batting first, the home side were restricted to 78-7 which represented something of a recovery from a perilous 15-4.
A partnership of 23 for the fifth wicket between Jordan Boss (8) and skipper Tom Mortiboys (4) - aided by a number of wides bowled by the Sandford seamers and an unbroken eight wicket partnership of 15 between
Evan Tinley (11bno) and William Birley (1no), took Cullompton to a respectable total.
Charlie Swinhoe was the pick of the Creedy Park side's bowlers with 3-10 from his allotted four overs. The visiting side got a good start, led by their impressive skipper Freddie Filor (19). Young Birley, playing in his first ever game of cricket, struck the all-important break through removing Filor's opening partner and wickets then began to tumble as Cully skipper Tom Mortiboys cleverly shuffled his bowling pack. Filor went on to top score with 19 before he was trapped leg before by the home skipper and the second highest contribution for the visitors was an unbeaten 11 from Will Balsdon.
In the field, George Hawkins took a fine catch at mid-on. Skipper Tom Mortiboys led by example taking 2-7 from his four and Evan Tinley claimed 2-11 from a full four overs whilst the other wickets fell to Birley (1-5 in two) and Sam Palmer (1-9 in three). The final over arrived with Sandford requiring eight to draw level with the hosts score and that got down to three to win off the last ball.
The final ball of the contest was chopped to square leg and the throw came in only for the glovesman to attempt to then hit the stumps. The ball missed the target and the visitors went on to scamper a further pair but the Sandford Umpire, very sportingly, called one short and the scores were left tied to complete a thrilling first game of the under-13 season at Landspeed Meadow.
Scores:
Cullompton 78-7 (E Tinley 11no, J Biss 8, J Dolley 5; C Swinhoe 3-10),
Sandford 78-6 (F Filor 19, Will Balsdon 11no; T Mortiboys 2-7, E Tinley
2-11, W Birley 1-5, S Palmer 1-9).
